Cultural courses and activities – combine Arabic with history and culture
As the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterized as the "world´s greatest open air museum". In Luxor there are many opportunities to experience the friendly and welcoming Upper Nile culture. The ancient and modern culture of Luxor awaits for those wanting to embark on a magical voyage.
A rich cultural programme - study groups and workshops led by experts, in Arabic and English – is available during the winter and spring periods. Cultural programmes can be organised for groups, and sightseeing can be arranged for individual students, all year around.
In-depth study groups
The themes of these groups include Egyptology, the Islamic and Coptic Christian religions, and the local customs of Upper Egypt. Theoretical studies are followed by guided visits. All lessons are conducted in Arabic and provide an excellent opportunity to expand your vocabulary (explanations are provided in English, French or Italian). You can enroll in study groups upon your arrival. You are also welcome to propose additional subjects of particular interest.
Classes in traditional cooking are held in a local home located across the Nile from the Language Institute. Here you have the chance to enjoy a pleasant boat trip and cooking of popular local dishes, such as molokheyya soup (local vegetable resembling spinach) over open fire, as well as the chance learn how to make "shamsi" bread.
The Nile provides another experience not to miss; learning Nile navigation in a felluca boat. The felluca captain will provide you with tips on Nile navigation as you make your way along the lush Nile banks towards Banana Island.
Calligraphy workshops aim to open up the door to the beautiful ocean of Arabic writing. Learning to write well in Arabic is a common aim among a large number of students. A more artistic approach is necessary to acquire the basis of the art of calligraphy.
Workshops in oriental dance are provided for those who wish to learn the special movements and techniques. The social role of the dance was extremely important in the ancient Egyptian culture. The rhythm, the movements, and the techniques have evolved throughout the centuries to develop a type of dance characterised by the movement of the belly and hips. Al-raqs as-sharqy is derived from a more folkloric and spontaneous dance called balady.
Absorbing the real atmosphere, the history, the ceremonies and habits of people´s daily life is the main aim of this cultural programme. We warmly recommend our students to combine Arabic courses with cultural studies in Luxor.

"Also, the fact that I took individual lessons and there were no group lessons running during my stay in Luxor, I mainly stayed with the family. Maybe if I would have gone there in season I would have had fellow travellers to do the sightseeing with (which sometimes felt a bit lonely).
