Arabic language courses in Luxor

AMBergh Education together with the leading Language Institute in Luxor offer Arabic language courses for students of all abilities, ages and backgrounds. Here you can enjoy your Arabic studies in a unique historic setting. If you wish, you can combine your language course with workshops in Egyptology, Islamic and Coptic Christian beliefs, local customs of Upper Egypt, Calligraphy, and Oriental dance, to name a few.

Luxor has grown into a town but the social structure remains that of a village. In the areas less frequented by tourists the doors of houses are almost always open. Here you have the chance to immerse yourself into the local setting with the help of teachers and guides. Absorbing the atmosphere, the history, the ceremonies, and local daily life is essential to grasp the depth of the Arabic language. Developing your cultural understanding is a core value and aim of the Language Institute. All teachers are native Arabic speakers, hold university degrees and have good experience of teaching Arabic as a second language.

Group courses are only available in the winter and spring when the weather is mild and pleasant. Individual courses are available all year around.

Group courses, Modern Standard Arabic
Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the written language of Arabic. It is developed from Classical Arabic which is the language of the Holy Quran. MSA is the language of newspapers and the media. It is a living language drawn up by educated people and intellectuals.

All students, except for absolute beginners, take an oral and written placement test upon arrival in order to ensure placement at correct level. Four levels of Modern Standard Arabic are taught, from beginners to advanced. Beginners need to attend at the course start. Arabic students with some experience can join a group course any Sunday during the active periods. If a group course at your specific level cannot be provided, you will be compensated with individual lessons.

You study four lessons per day, five days a week (20 lessons per week), Sunday-Thursday. Minimum course duration: one week. The number of students for each class is limited to eight.

Communication is the guiding principle at the Language Institute. Parallel to conversational activities such as role play and group discussions, games are used to further stimulate Arabic communication skills.

At beginners´ level, you will start with the Arab alphabet, basic vocabulary and the foundation of grammar. You will acquire the necessary skills to read, understand and write simple sentences, and manage easy everyday situations in Arabic.

At intermediate level, you will be introduced to simple dialogues and texts, with a focus on regular verb forms and pronunciation. You will also be introduced to irregular verbs, new grammar structures and vocabulary.

At advanced levels, the emphasis is on consolidating conversational skills, grammatical knowledge and enriching your vocabulary. Teaching materials include newspaper articles, songs, local proverbs and extracts from modern and classical novels. Writing short essays and creating conversational situations also improve your linguistic abilities.

For highly advanced students, focus is on vocabulary and new phrases drawn from poetry and novels, newspaper articles and essays on social, cultural, and political subjects.

Individual courses, Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic
Taking an individual course gives you excellent opportunities to steer the pace and content of your lessons. The tutors are very good in adapting lessons to meet the needs of their students. One-to-one tuition guarantees fast progress and focuses on developing those language skills which are important to you. You can choose to study Modern Standard Arabic or Colloquial Arabic. Courses vary from 10 to 30 lessons a week, depending on what suits you best. Individual lessons are available all year around.

Colloquial Arabic is only available in Individual courses. The Language Institute has developed its own curricula in Colloquial Arabic (five levels, from beginners to advanced). The book ´Kallimni Arabi´ (books and CDs, 5 levels) is used.
